Georgia Attorney General

Thurbert Baker

As floor leader in the Georgia House of Representatives in the 1990s, Thurbert E. Baker spearheaded some of the most significant legislation in modern Georgia history, including the HOPE scholarship program and such anticrime measures as the "Two Strikes and You're Out" law and tougher sentences for drunk drivers.

In 1997, he was appointed attorney general by Governor Zell Miller and was then elected for three consecutive terms.

Baker also served as an attorney for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and managed his own firm. In 2003, Black Enterprise magazine named him one of America's top black lawyers.
