175 Makers of History: Erik A. Fyfe

Developer of Emory's Biofuel Program

Erik Fyfe

Erik A. Fyfe found a handy answer to that age-old question, "What to do with used cooking oil?"

For his senior honors thesis, Fyfe analyzed the potential for a community-based biodiesel alternative fuel program using a model developed by the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE). Thanks to his persistence, nearly half of Emory's shuttle fleet now runs on recycled raw materials from the fry vats of Emory's campus dining services and other area restaurants. The program has been managed in partnership with the nonprofit SACE since fall 2007.

After graduating, Fyfe continued his commitment to the environment, living on a 75-foot sloop on New York's Hudson River and educating school children and adults on the value of caring for America's threatened waterways. He is currently pursing a master's degree in environmental science at Yale University.
