175 Makers of History: Robert Tyre "Bobby" Jones

Only Winner of the Grand Slam in Golf

In 1921, the nineteen-year-old Jones Robert Tyre "Bobby" Jones first arrived at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews to compete in the British Open. In 1930, Jones won the British and United States Open and Amateur championships -- the first golf Grand Slam.

In his mid-twenties, Jones attended Emory School of Law and began practicing with his father's firm. He already had earned degrees in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech and English literature from Harvard.

He later designed the course at Augusta National, home of the Masters, a yearly tournament that he helped establish. Emory's Bobby Jones Scholarship exchange program with the University of St. Andrews is named in his memory.
