First Female Medical School Faculty Member
A beloved teacher and administrator, Evangeline T. Papageorge was the first female full-time faculty member in the School of Medicine (she taught biochemistry and clinical chemistry) and the school's first woman administrator (she was dean of students for nineteen years).
Papageorge retired in 1975 but kept her seat on the alumni board and was a regent emerita until her death in 2002. In 1993, medical school alumni presented the first Evangeline Papageorge Teaching Award, and they give the award annually to the faculty member deemed the best teacher in the medical school. A number of scholarships also are given each year in her name.
