175 Makers of History: Betty Marie Stewart
Betty Marie Stewart 52N
First Woman President, Emory Alumni Association
![]() |
Betty Marie Stewart was the first woman to serve as president of what is now the Emory Alumni Board (she served in 1978 - 1979), and the energetic octogenarian remains a fixture at Emory alumni events in Atlanta, especially those of the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing.
Not only was Stewart the first woman to serve as alumni board president, she was also the first from the nursing school. In the early 1970s Stewart helped revitalize the nursing school's alumni activities, and, ever since, no one has been more influential among nursing alumni than Stewart.
