Theologian; Founder, Hiroshima Peace Center Foundation
The minister of the Nagarehawa United Church of Christ in Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945, was Candler School of Theology alumnus Kiyoshi Tanimoto.
The atomic bomb that dropped that day destroyed Tanimoto's church and killed scores of his parishioners. Tanimoto survived and devoted many years to helping other survivors. Most prominent among them were the "Hiroshima Maidens," twenty-five young women disfigured by the blast. After the war, Tanimoto toured the U.S. to raise money for their care as well as other peace projects. Many of the women also came to the U.S. for reconstructive surgery.
