Outreach

Community service is an interactive way to learn. Emory purposefully cultivates the development of "engaged scholars," who use their education in service to others.

Outreach

Students, faculty and staff reach out to serve the community in Atlanta and around the world.

  • Volunteer Emory, founded by two students nearly 30 years ago, assists with student, faculty and staff service initiatives at local schools, parks and nonprofits.
  • Students provided nearly 150,000 hours of service in 2008, working with more than 200 community partners.

Several offices and initiatives help students integrate service to others into their Emory experience, including:

Emory received the 2008 Presidential Award for General Community Service, the highest federal recognition made to a college or university for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

With a highly ranked medical school and broad-based health care facilities, Emory offers treatment to thousands of neighbors in need. In fiscal year 2009, Emory doctors provided $48.9 million in charity care through Emory Healthcare. In 2009, they provided another $23.1 million in uncompensated care at the publicly owned Grady Memorial Hospital.

The university also works to be a considerate neighbor. Emory works with the Clifton Community Partnership, a community initiative between the University and its surrounding neighborhoods, to enhance a vibrant, living-learning-working environment throughout the Clifton Road community.

The university was one of the first institutions to earn the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching's "Community Engagement" classification. Within that, Emory was one of only four major private research institutions to be recognized for both curricular engagement and outreach and partnerships.
