Recovery Act Funding at Emory University

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, signed into law in February 2009, includes significant funding for research and development from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other federal agencies.

Awards to Emory University researchers wiil support highly meritorious research projects that might not otherwise be funded, administrative supplements for ongoing projects, new faculty recruitment, research training programs, and summer student research experiences. All will help create new jobs.

Emory has also received funding from the Department of Education for financial aid through the Federal Pell Grant and Work Study Programs.

Uncovering Schizophrenia Genes

Dissecting out individual genes linked to schizophrenia has been difficult. Brad Pearce, PhD, an epidemiologist in Emory's Rollins School of Public Health, is working with several Emory colleagues to examine related genes. The project is a good example of how geneticists are shifting from examining small, common mutations to "rare variants" when studying complex diseases.
