Many departments at Emory invite international visitors to campus for various reasons. If the visit is meant to be temporary, you will want to review the J categories and descriptions to determine if the J visa is appropriate for your visitor. If so, your invitation to the visitor makes you the “host” to the Exchange Visitor. At ISSS, we use the phrase “hosting department” since it is the department who usually welcomes and oversees the person while at Emory. The expectation is that the “host” will see to the visitor as a temporary “guest” to Emory.
Activities in an Exchange Program may be designed to mutually meet the needs of the Exchange Visitor and the host. However, it is important that the Exchange Visitor meet eligibility requirements to participate in the program based on the selected category that fits the program objective. If you are not sure that the Exchange Visitor Program is right for your program’s objective or for your visitor, you may contact the ISSS and speak with a scholar advisor.
The departmental administrative and faculty contact for a J exchange visitor will be expected to:
Know and understand the purpose of the Exchange Visitor Program
Attend ISSS’s Training Programs on bringing scholars to Emory
Learn the procedures for requesting a J scholar
Know and understand legal reporting requirements for J scholars
Know and understand how to enable J scholars to maintain legal status
