Employment Restrictions

Exchange Visitors (EVs) must receive authorization from the Program Sponsor for any employment. The EV must report a job offer to ISSS for authorization. Authorization is job-specific, so if a new job is offered a new authorization will be needed. This applies to both students and scholars.

Incidental Employment for J-Scholars

For Research Scholars and Professors, employment at Emory is sometimes a normal part of the arrangement and the duties, location, and salary is described in the scholar’s record. Any proposed employment outside this circumstance should be reported to ISSS prior to the activity.

Occasionally, a visiting scholar may be asked to attend a professional conference to present a paper, a lecture, or consultation. As long as the activity is relative to the scholar’s original objectives for being in the Exchange Program at Emory, s/he is eligible to obtain incidental employment authorization. The scholar’s supervisor must provide information about the activity (permission, location, address, contact, dates) to ISSS prior to the event. The scholar will be authorized in SEVIS for the employment, and a letter of authorization will be provided to the scholar to carry with him to the event.

The scholar is required to present evidence of a job offer, since J employment authorization is job-specific. Each and every job offer must be approved for employment authorization prior to beginning the job.
