Generally, the extension request procedures are basically the same as for a new request. But some of the supporting documents are not necessary, since they are probably already in the EV’s file. Submit an online request in PeopleSoft to ISSS and submit hard copies of the following documents:
Exchange Visitor Information Form (completed and signed by the scholar)
Include copies of any new visa-related documents to the form.
Include copy of health insurance proof.
DRF (Departmental Request Form) for Scholars and Student Interns;
J Checklist and Compliance Form with original signatures;
Proof of new financial support for the additional time;
Proof of any other changes that take place with this extension;
Proof of continuing health insurance for EV and any dependents (usually a copy of the insurance cards or a letter)
Departments and Exchange Visitors are sent automatic notices from ISSS when the program end dates falls within a 6-month period. That should be ample time to plan for the extension request or to report the end of program. However, it is possible that some EVs could not receive the message for some reason. Departments who want their Exchange Visitors to be extended should be careful to make sure the requests are early. Extension requests for scholars should be received ideally no later than 1 or 2 months prior to the end date on the Form DS-2019. Extension requests that are received after the program end date WILL be refused, since the EV’s program will have already ended and the SEVIS record will have already been put into INACTIVE status. An Exchange Visitor whose program end date has expired on the Form DS-2019 has a limited time to exit the U.S.
Note: Extensions are not possible for J Exchange Visitors who have received a recommendation or an approval for a waiver of the 2-year home physical presence requirement.
