J-1s Transferring To Emory

J Exchange Visitors who are currently at another institution (inside the U.S.) and have been offered an exchange invitation to come to Emory may request permission to transfer to continue their program, provided:

  1. the transfer is necessary to continue and complete their original exchange program objective;
  2. and the scholar remains in the same J-1 category in which they are currently sponsored, e.g. remains a J-1 Research Scholar.

The scholar is responsible for notifying his/her current exchange program sponsor of their intent to transfer, after securing the approval of the new sponsor for the purpose of continuing and completing your original program objective in your current J-1 category.

The hosting department is responsible for submitting a request for a new J Scholar in PeopleSoft to initiate the process.  The completed transfer-in form, copies of the scholar’s current DS-2019, passport, visa, and I-94 card should be included with the usual request materials.   ISSS will notify the scholar and the department when the transfer is approved.

The scholar’s last day at the current school will be the date the SEVIS record will be transferred and that can be the first day at Emory.  The scholar will be expected to check in at ISSS that first week to finalize the official transfer in SEVIS.  At the check-in and orientation, the scholar will then receive a new DS-2019 Form from ISSS.
