TN and TD visa holders desiring to travel outside the U.S. should make sure they have the following documentation prior to traveling. A printable version of this document can be found here (insert quick link to TN travel checklist).
Please note: All non-immigrant visa holders should consult with ISSS if they desire to travel while a change of status or extension of status is pending. Travel during this time could have a negative impact on the TN filing.
Departments and scholars should be aware that travel and subsequent application for a visa stamp may trigger security clearance delays for your incoming scholar. You can read about security clearance delays or “administrative processing” here.
Departments must provide a letter for scholars traveling out of the U.S. indicating that they are returning to the U.S. to resume employment. You may be required to write two letters, one to the U.S. Consulate (for Mexican Citizens if a new visa stamp is needed), and another to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) (for both Mexican and Canadian citizens to facilitate re-entry).
