TN and TD visa holders desiring to travel outside the U.S. should make sure they have the proper documentation to return to the U.S. Read carefully the TN Checklist for Travel Outside the U.S. for all the documents required to legally return to the U.S. in TN or TD status.
Please note: All TN or TD non-immigrant visa holders should consult with ISSS if they desire to travel while a change of status or extension of status is pending. Travel during this time could have a negative impact on the TN filing.
Departments and scholars should be aware that travel and subsequent application for a visa stamp for TN Mexican citizens may trigger security clearance delays for these returning scholars. You can read about security clearance delays or “administrative processing” here (link will take you out of the Administrators Area).
Departments must provide a letter for all TN employees traveling out of the U.S. indicating that they are returning to the U.S. to resume employment. Departments may be required to write two letters, one to the U.S. Consulate (for Mexican citizens if a new visa stamp is needed), and another to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) (for both Mexican and Canadian citizens to facilitate re-entry).
