Employing International Students

After obtaining authorization from ISSS, F-1 and J-1 students whose immigration documents have been produced by Emory University may work on campus up to 20 hours per week when school is in session and more than 20 hours per week during official University breaks and vacations. Some J-1 students at Emory University have immigration documents produced by a sponsoring organization (ex: Fulbright). These students must obtain authorization from their sponsoring organization prior to beginning employment on campus. Please note: international students in any non-immigrant visa status are ineligible for Federal Work Study positions. These positions are reserved for U.S. citizens and permanent residents (green card holders) only.

More information about the on-campus employment process – including details about obtaining ISSS authorization and the SSN application processing forms – is available in the Employment section of our website. For more information on the Emory on-boarding paperwork and I-9 verification process, please reference the Manager and HR Rep Toolkit.

If you will hire an individual who is in F-1 or J-1 status studying at another institution, you may reference the sections on off-campus employment for F-1 and J-1 students in the Employment section of our website and may also contact ISSS for guidance.
