International Students & Scholars ISSS Office Schedule Changes ISSS will remain open all afternoon on Wednesday, Dec. 14 to provide travel signatures to students and scholars. Our office will be closed 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16. Walk-in hours for Friday, Dec. 16 are scheduled for 8:30 – 11 a.m. 12/13/11
International Students & Scholars Applications Open for Emory's M.A. in Bioethics Are you interested in a Master of Arts degree in Bioethics? Join other scholars and students for the Master of Arts in Bioethics Program at Emory University. Applications are due March 1, but priority review will be afford to those who apply by January 1. 12/08/11
International Students USCIS Has Reached FY2012 H-1B Cap U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced on Nov. 23 that it had received a sufficient number of H-1B petitions to reach the statutory cap of 65,000 for fiscal year 2012 (FY12). USCIS will begin accepting additional cap-subject H-1B petitions on April 1, 2012 for FY13 (Oct. 1, 2012 through Sept. 30, 2013). 11/28/11

International Students Apply to Attend 2012 Clinton Global Initiative Meeting Each year, the Clinton Global Initiative University hosts a meeting where students from across the world, national youth organizations, topic experts, and celebrities discuss solutions to pressing global issues. This year, CGI U will be held at the George Washington University from March 30 to April 1, 2012. 11/14/11
Indian Students & Scholars U.S. Consulate in Mumbai Moves to New Facility Effective Nov. 15 The U.S. Consulate General Mumbai will close its locations this month at Lincoln House in Breach Candy and at the American Center in Churchgate, and will move to its new facility in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). 11/08/11

Students Celebrate Thanksgiving on Nov. 24 The Thanksgiving holidays are fast approaching, and the staff at ISSS would like to encourage all international students and scholars to take advantage of one of the many opportunities to experience Thanksgiving. Students 33rd Annual Welcome Reception for International Students, Oct. 22 The International Student Welcome Reception is an annual event organized by the Atlanta Ministry with International Students (AMIS) to welcome and honor all international students and scholars studying in Atlanta metropolitan area colleges and universities. Come and meet old and new friends, enjoy a great concert with the internationally acclaimed Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra (Jere Flint, Director) and eat international food—a winning combination, not to be missed! 10/13/11

All Online registration for the Green Card lottery begins at noon on Oct. 4 The congressionally mandated Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (a.k.a. the Green Card Lottery) makes up to 50,000 permanent resident visas available annually to persons who meet strict eligibility requirements and who are citizens of countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.  09/30/11
Indian Students & Scholars U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai Resumes H and L Visa Processing The U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai has announced that the post will resume conducting visa interviews for H and L Visa applicants. 09/14/11
All Emory Announces Name Change for International Student and Scholar Services Emory recently announced that its International Student and Scholar Programs (ISSP) office has become International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) as of September 1. The change reflects the office’s shift toward prioritizing services on immigration and compliance in an increasingly complex U.S. regulatory environment. 09/12/11

Students Apply for P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund provides scholarships for selected women from other countries for graduate study in the United States and Canada. Applications are due by December 15, 2011. 09/01/11
Administrators Change to H-1B Fee Payment Policy As of 1 September 2011, Emory departments will be required to pay the $325 filing fee for H-1B petitions for faculty and staff in that status. The $325 fee is the standard application fee assessed by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Federal regulations require that the fee be paid by the hiring organization, rather than by the employee. 08/29/11
Scholars International Scholar Orientation Canceled on August 18 H-1B and J Scholar Orientation will be canceled on Thursday, August 18. If your department expects to have J Scholars or H-1B employees arriving the week of August 15, please make arrangements for them to attend orientation either Tuesday, August 16 or Tuesday, August 23. 08/10/11
Syrian Students & Scholars Visa Services at U.S. Embassy in Damascus Suspended Indefinitely All visa services at the U.S. Embassy in Damascus have been suspended until further notice. The Embassy will continue to process the visa applications of anyone who was interviewed prior to the suspension of visa services. 08/08/11

Latin American and Caribbean Students Interest-Free Educational Loans Available Did you know that the Organization of American States (OAS) has a financial aid program for Latin American and Caribbean individuals to help them cover a portion of their higher education studies at universities in the United States? The Leo S. Rowe Pan American Fund, or Rowe Fund, offers interest-free loans for up to $15,000 per individual. 08/03/11
F-1 and J-1 Doctoral Students ISSS Policy Change for PhD Students ISSS will now define completion of studies for all students in doctoral programs as graduation. Therefore, I-20 and DS-2019 Forms for Ph.D. students in F-1 and J-1 status at Emory will be adjusted to May, August, or December to reflect the accurate graduation date. 07/01/11

Department Admins Important Announcement Regarding New J-1 Requests International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is enforcing its policy requiring departments to submit requests for new J exchange visitors no less than 3 months in advance of the proposed start date. 06/06/11
F and J Nonimmigrants from Iran Visa Validity Lengthened for Iranian F and J Nonimmigrants On May 20, 2011, the U.S. Department of State (DoS) revised the visa validity schedule for Iranian F, M and J nonimmigrants pursuing non-sensitive, non-technical fields of study and research. The revision also applies to their dependents. 05/27/11
All House Bill 87: Illegal Immigration Reform and Enforcement Act of 2011 Georgia Governor Nathan Deal signed into law the Illegal Immigration Reform and Enforcement Act of 2011 on May 13th. This bill focuses on primarily on verification of a foreign citizen's legal status in the United States for the purpose of employment and/or eligibility for public benefits. It also authorizes law enforcement officials to seek to verify the immigration status of individuals suspected of a crime. 05/27/11
