J-1 Scholars
An Exchange Visitor’s Spouse and children under the age of 21 may apply for the J-2 dependent visa. Proof of additional financial support is required to cover the expenses for each dependent, before the Form DS-2019 is issued to each dependent. The Form will enable them to apply for the J-2 visa, and they may enter with the primary J-1 holder or any time after the J-1 has arrived.
J-2 Dependent Health Insurance
While all Exchange Visitors are responsible for maintaining legal status, it is the responsibility of the J-1 to make sure his/her dependents are maintaining legal status. All Exchange Visitors and all dependents are required to have health insurance coverage. Keep in mind that additional health insurance coverage for dependents is often much more expensive than for the primary J-1 alone. For more information on Health Insurance please click here.
