Employment

F-1 Students

F-1 students are eligible to work on the Emory University campus, part-time (20 hours per week) during the school year and full-time (more than 20 hours per week) during vacations. ISSS authorization is required. If you receive a stipend (assistantship or fellowship usually for graduate students), this is considered on-campus work and counts towards the number of hours per week you may be employed even if you are not required to perform any duties to receive your stipend. Verify the number of working hours recorded weekly for your stipend with the Human Resources liaison in your department to determine if you may accept additional on-campus employment without exceeding the 20 hour limit.

In general, no type of work other than on-campus employment is allowed for the first academic year that you are in F-1 status unless you are a graduate student and employment is required as an academic component of your program. Following a period of one year in F-1 status, students may be eligible for additional types of employment. Our website lists more information about employment and an International Student Advisor will also discuss employment at International Student Orientation.

J-1 Students

J-1 students are eligible to work on the Emory University campus, part-time (20 hours per week) during the school year and full-time (more than 20 hours per week) during vacations. If you receive a stipend (assistantship or fellowship, usually for graduate students), this is considered on-campus work and counts towards the number of hours per week you may be employed, even if you are not required to perform any duties to receive your stipend. Verify the number of working hours recorded weekly for your stipend with the Human Resources liaison in your department to determine if you may accept additional on-campus employment without exceeding the 20 hour limit.

Off-campus employment related to the field of study is possible both during and after the program of study via authorization for Academic Training but is limited to part-time participation during the academic year. J-1 students must obtain written approval from the J-1 sponsor for each specific on-campus and off-campus job. Our website lists more information about employment and an International Student Advisor will also discuss employment at International Student Orientation.

Getting paid as a student at Emory

If you will receive any type of payment for services on campus, other than travel reimbursements, you must provide information for Residency Status and Treaty Eligibility to the Controller’s Office. The necessary information to complete Form 8233 (for treaty benefits) and determine residency status for tax purposes must be submitted online.
