Transferring From Emory

You are allowed to transfer your J-1 status to another exchange program sponsor provided 1) the transfer is necessary to continue and complete your original exchange program objective, 2) and you remain in the same J-1 category in which you are currently sponsored, e.g. remain a J-1 Research Scholar. Before you notify your current exchange program sponsor of your intent to transfer, you must secure the approval of the new sponsor to sponsor you for the purpose of continuing and completing your original program objective in your current J-1 category.

Transferring programs without leaving the country

You should contact your exchange program’s Responsible or Alternate Responsible Officer (RO/ARO) to discuss the transfer. You should provide your RO/ARO with the name and Program Number of the exchange program to which you will transfer. You should also discuss the purpose of the transfer and the intended activity proposed by the new exchange program sponsor and the date on which you would like to transfer.. You should have copies of all the DS-2019s issued to you when you meet to discuss the transfer. Once your current sponsor has agreed to the transfer, your current RO/ARO as well as the RO/ARO of the program to which you will transfer will coordinate the transfer process. Both RO/AROs will provide you with further details on what you must do to facilitate the transfer.
