Emory-sponsored J-1 scholars (Professors, Research Scholars, and Specialists, Short-Term Scholars, and Non-Degree Students in a Prescribed Course of Study) are expected to maintain legal J status throughout their visit. Paying attention to status issues can help avoid problems, and staying out of trouble will lead to a positive and more fulfilling experience in the Exchange Visitor Program.
Emory Exchange Visitors receive a detailed list of program rules and regulations at the new scholar orientation upon arrival. Scholars are responsible for signing a Memorandum of Understanding, acknowledging that these rules are understood and that assistance will be sought from a scholar advisor at ISSS if needed. Here is a short list of requirements:
Engage only in employment authorized on the form DS-2019 or in writing by a Responsible or Alternate Responsible Officer (RO/ARO) of the program
Comply with all local, state, and federal laws
Keep your passport current (if passport required)
For reentry in J status, obtain an RO/ARO travel signature prior to travelling outside of the country; supply ISSS with photocopies of any new documents upon reentry (I-94 card, new visa stamp)
Keep Human Resources informed of your current telephone number and address (if no funding or benefits are coming from Emory University, keep ISSS informed of your current telephone number and address) within ten days of any change
Maintain adequate medical insurance for self and all accompanying dependents
Inform ISSS of any legal name changes for self or dependents within ten days of any change
Report any changes in funding or program activity to your RO/ARO immediately
Make normal progress toward completing the exchange program activity by completing the activity before the expiration date on Form DS-2019 or by contacting an RO/ARO to request an extension or transfer prior to that date
Remain in the U.S. no longer than 30 days after completion of the exchange visitor activity
