ISSS must be notified in advance and give approval before you receive any promotion while employed at Emory in TN status. In your discussions with your department, please inform your supervisor of its obligations to notify ISSS of any anticipated promotion. You and your department will need to do the following:
Your department will need to complete the promotion form and send to ISSS.
ISSS will respond to your department with the required next step, which will either be:
Writing a standard promotional notification letter to ISSS (see promotion form for a template),
Requesting a TN amendment filing or instruct you on how to process such a change through travel if the promotion is not a standard promotion. ISSS will be required to file an amended TN petition if you decide to remain in the U.S. and this petition must be receipted before you may be promoted to the new position. If you decide to travel, then presenting the employment letter outlining the new employment along with your valid passport (and valid TN visa stamp if you are a Mexican National) will allow you to reenter the U.S. in TN under your new employment and you may commence employment upon return to the U.S. See amend/extend instructions.
If the promotion is not standard and does not fall within the list of TN professions, then you will need to seek other options such as changing your status to a temporary non-immigrant worker status such as H-1B
