Extending a Current J-1

Your hosting department must request an extension on your behalf to extend your exchange program. Requests for extension should be initiated up to three months prior to the end date on your current DS-2019.

Each category has a time limit for participation in an EV program, and any extension request cannot exceed the maximum time limit for the respective category. Documentation submitted by the department will be similar to the general request process. You will need to provide proof of financial support, proof of health insurance, and any updates to your biographical information.

Requests to extend a program must be received prior to the end date on the current DS-2019. Any request submitted after the expiration date will be denied. Remember that all your EV program information is in the Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). If the expiration date on the DS-2019 has already passed before an extension request is submitted, your SEVIS record will have already been put in inactive status, and you will have to exit within 30 days of the expiry date on your current DS-2019.

If you are subject to the two-year home physical presence requirement [212(e)], have filed a request to be waived of that requirement, and have already received a letter from the Department of State recommending the waiver, you are not eligible for an extension.
