Eligibility for Extensions
The student must:
If the student is already beyond the normal time to degree as outlined by the program, he or she must also:
The student must complete the Request for Program Extension Form with the Academic Advisor and bring the completed form to an appointment with the International Student Advisor along with proof of continued insurance coverage for the duration of the extension and proof of financial support for the duration of the extension. Please note: if a J-1 student is still within the normal time to degree as outlined by the academic program and simply needs an extension of the document because he or she needs to provide additional evidence of financial resources, there is no need to complete the request form or provide documentation of an academic or medical reason for the extension. Only a description of the financial requirement and sufficient funds to meet that requirement are necessary in the case of a financial extension for a J-1 student.
The amount of support should be equivalent to the current financial certificate for your school. Financial certificates are updated each year. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to request the current form. If you are a doctoral student who is in tuition-paid status, you will need a letter from the Laney Graduate School (LGS) certifying the current costs for your program. If you are receiving funding from your school, you must have a letter stating the amount and duration, differentiating the amount for tuition and stipend. If you are not receiving funding from your school to cover all expenses, you would need to fill out an updated financial certificate and include an official letter from your/your sponsor’s financial institution verifying that you/your sponsor have sufficient funds to cover your expenses. Your sponsor will need to sign a section of the financial certificate confirming their agreement to sponsor you. Funds from AT may not be used to document financial support.
If sponsored by an agency other than Emory University, the student must deal directly with the sponsor regarding extension procedures, which may vary according to the specific sponsor.
