Non Emory-Sponsored J-1s

In addition to providing immigration documents to J-1 students, Emory also enrolls both non-degree and degree-seeking Exchange Visitors who enter the United States with immigration documents produced by other organizations (ex: Fulbright). These students' DS-2019 Forms list an organization other than Emory as the program sponsor. The program sponsor is responsible for providing advice on the maintenance of J-1 status. Contact your program sponsor for advice on immigration issues, signing your DS-2019 for travel, authorizing employment and writing letters certifying your status. It is important to note that your program sponsor policies may differ from those of ISSS. For example, the terms of the Fulbright agreement in your home country may preclude you from engaging in Academic Training.

ISSS will assist you with basic immigration unless this is a direct conflict with your program sponsors requirements. We are here to assist you in emergency situations. Additionally, we highly encourage you to participate in workshops provided by ISSS or other organizations on campus.
