Any F-1 student unable to complete the program of study by the program end date listed in item #5 on the I-20 must apply for a program extension before that date. If your program end date has already passed, you are out of status and are not eligible for an extension.
The student must:
have a current I-94 record showing F-1 status and D/S (Duration of Status),
have continually maintained status, and
show that the delay was caused by a legitimate academic reason (change of major or research topic, unexpected research problems, loss of credits upon transfer to Emory, etc.) or documented illness. (Please note: delays caused by academic probation or suspension are not acceptable reasons for program extension.)
After consulting with an academic advisor or dean, complete the I-20 Extension Request e-form in ISSS Link.
