Extending Your Program
Any F-1 student unable to complete the program of study by the program end date listed in item #5 on the I-20 must apply for a program extension before that date. If the program end date has already passed, the student is out of status and is not eligible for an extension.
Eligibility for Extensions
The student must
- Have a current I-94 record showing F-1 status and D/S (Duration of Status)
- Have continually maintained status
- Show that the delay was caused by a legitimate academic reason (change of major or research topic, unexpected research problems, loss of credits upon transfer to Emory, etc.) or documented illness. (Please note: delays caused by academic probation or suspension are not acceptable reasons for program extension.)
Students needing to request an extension should log into ISSS Link and complete the Program Extension request e-form.
