Emory employees support professorships

Over the past year, two percent of employee gifts have supported Emory faculty. One example of employee gifts at work is physician-scientist Jack Arbiser, who has been named the first Thomas J. Lawley Professor. A practicing dermatologist, Arbiser discovered that honokiol, a compound derived from the magnolia tree, slows the progression of several cancers by inhibiting the growth of new blood vessels that supply tumors with the oxygen and nutrients they need to grow. His professorship is named for former Emory School of Medicine Dean Thomas Lawley, who retired in 2012.
