Emory Named 'New Ivy' in National College Guide

Emory University is one of 25 top schools in the nation tapped as a "New Ivy" in Kaplan/Newsweek's 2007 "How to Get Into College Guide."

The Kaplan/Newsweek guide includes this year for the first time a list of the "New Ivies" – colleges whose first-rate academic programs, combined with a population boom in top students, have fueled their rise in stature and favor among the nation's top students, administrators and faculty – edging them to a competitive status rivaling the Ivy League.

The designation is based on admissions statistics as well as interviews with administrators, students, faculty and alumni at Emory and across the nation. Emory was the only school in Georgia named to the list and one of five Southern schools.

"Emory's academic reputation is fantastic and we're known as a school where our top faculty actually teach undergraduates. Many students are attracted to Emory because we focus on helping students find out what they're good at, and we expect them to use their talents to make the world a better place. Plus, we're in the city of Atlanta with its tremendous cultural and professional opportunities," says Robert Paul, dean of Emory College, the university's primary undergraduate division.

The guide notes that in 2005, "applications to Emory climbed 18.5 percent from the previous year and came from all 50 states … Students often cite Emory's Atlanta location, which makes it easy to get internships and jobs, as well as to cross-register with the other colleges in the area. But as a major university, Emory has plenty to keep students busy on their own campus." The guide will be on newsstands Aug. 21.
