Faculty Members Receive Awards For Outstanding Teaching, Research, Leadership

Ten Emory University faculty members were honored with teaching, research and mentoring awards presented at the university’s commencement ceremony May 13.

Al L. Hartgraves, professor of accounting at the Goizueta Business School, received the University Scholar/Teacher Award. The recipient is chosen by Emory faculty on behalf of the United Methodist Church Board of Higher Education and Ministry. Hartgraves is a resident of Jasper, Ga. (30143).

Irwin Townsend Hyatt Jr., senior associate dean of Emory College and associate professor of history, received the Thomas Jefferson Award, which is presented to a faculty member or administrative officer in recognition of significant service to the university through personal activities, influence and leadership. Hyatt has spent nearly his entire life associated with Emory University. He was born in Emory Hospital, graduated from Emory College in 1956 and earned his graduate degree from Emory University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 1958. And, Hyatt retires this year after spending his entire 37-year career at Emory. He is a resident of Atlanta (30307).

George Armelagos, professor of anthropology, received the George P. Cuttino Award for Excellence in Mentoring, established in 1997 by trustee John T. Glover. Armelagos is a resident of Atlanta (30309).

Seven Emory professors received the Emory Williams Award for Distinguished Teaching. The university’s most prestigious awards for teaching were established in 1972 by alumnus Emory Williams. The three awards in the arts and sciences are selected by a committee of Emory College faculty. Goizueta Business School, Oxford College and Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing each present an award for excellence in undergraduate teaching, and one other award rotates among the professional schools. The 2002 recipients of the Emory Williams Award are:

Rose B. Cannon, associate professor, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing. She is a resident of Atlanta (30328).

Andrea Hershatter, lecturer in organization and management, assistant dean and director of the bachelor of business administration program at the Goizueta Business School. She is a resident of Atlanta (30327).

Cathryn Johnson, associate professor of sociology. She is a resident of Decatur (30030).

Steven W. L’Hernault, associate professor of biology. He is a resident of Atlanta (30307).

Sally Radell, associate professor of health, physical education and dance, and chair of the dance program. She is a resident of Atlanta (30312).

Susan B. Riner, Oxford College senior lecturer in mathematics. She is a resident of Conyers (30094).

John Witte, Jonas Robitscher Professor of Law and Ethics. He is a resident of Atlanta (30329).
