Emory Buys American Cancer Society Property

Emory University and the American Cancer Society have completed negotiations for the university's purchase of the Society's national headquarters building on Clifton Road.

The American Cancer Society has announced that it is combining its National Home Office on Clifton Road with its regional South Atlantic Division in Lenox Park, and relocating the offices to a larger space in downtown Atlanta.

When the Society moved to its Clifton Road location in 1989 to join Emory's hospitals and health sciences complex, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the area was dubbed the Clifton Corridor, a constellation of agencies and activities devoted to healthcare research and practice.

"We will miss the American Cancer Society as a neighbor but we are delighted that they have decided to remain in Atlanta, and we will continue to remain friends and partners in our mutual dedication to benefiting society through our respective missions," says Emory University President Jim Wagner. "The Society's presence adds significantly to Atlanta's national and international reputation as a public health capital."

The four-acre Clifton Road property is located directly adjacent to the Emory Inn and in front of the Emory Conference Center. Preliminary plans for the space call for housing several administrative units as well as academic and research administrative services all geared to enable more efficient implementation of the university's 10-year strategic plan. Under the terms of the purchase agreement, the American Cancer Society will have the right to occupy the building until June 2007, allowing nearly a year of transition to the Society in accomplishing its move.

"The purchase of this building and associated property was obviously not included in our current campus master plan because its availability on the market represented an unexpected opportunity," says Mike Mandl, Emory's executive vice president for finance and administration. "This much-needed, high-quality office and meeting space will help to support the acceleration of Emory's strategic plan over the next decade. The purchase is consistent with our strategic vision of building a more vibrant and cohesive Emory campus as part of the greater Clifton community."
