Former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft will speak at Emory University on "Leadership in Trying Times" at 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 11 in the Woodruff Physical Education Center, 600 Asbury Circle, Emory. The event is free and open to the public.

Ashcroft's speech will cover several topics, including: the relationship between religion and the government; corporate prosecutions under his tenure (including the Microsoft antitrust case and Enron); and the tension between individual liberties and national security. His speech will be followed by a Q-and-A session. The event is sponsored by the Pre-Law Society, Center for Ethics, College Republicans, Young Democrats, and other campus departments and groups. Parking will be available in the Peavine deck, 29 Fraternity Row.

Ashcroft served as U.S. Attorney General under President George W. Bush during his first term from 2001to 2005. Ashcroft was elected to the U.S. Senate from Missouri in 1994 and served until 2001. He served as governor of Missouri from 1985 to 1993, during which he spearheaded the state's efforts in reducing the use of illegal drugs and balanced eight consecutive budgets. He also served as chairman of the Education Commission of the States. Fortune magazine rated Ashcroft one of the "Top Ten Education Governors," and Financial World and City and State magazines credited him with making Missouri one of the best financially managed states.

Prior to entering public service, Ashcroft taught business law at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield. He authored a book honoring his father, "Lessons From a Father to His Son," and co-authored multiple editions of two college law textbooks with his wife, Janet.
