Belafonte to Speak at Emory's Candler School of Theology

Musician, actor and social activist Harry Belafonte will be the keynote speaker Thursday, Feb. 15, at a banquet celebrating Heritage Week at Emory University's Candler School of Theology. Candler's Black Student Caucus, which sponsors Heritage Week, is celebrating its 25th anniversary Feb. 12-16 with a series of events to honor and remember the tradition of the black church and the history of Africans in America.

Belafonte will speak on "Encountering the Divine Through Black Expressions," an account of his career and personal growth in the context of the human rights struggle.

Tickets for the banquet are $35 per person and are on sale now. Special pricing is available for those who purchase whole tables.

Also scheduled during Heritage Week is "The Black Manologues," a black-owned production headed by Jaquay Waller, to be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at Glenn Memorial auditorium. Tickets are $10 per person.

Other Heritage Week events include a worship service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb.13 in Cannon Chapel, with preaching by the Rev. Dr. Maisha Handy of the Interdenominational Theological Center.
