Emory Launches Interactive Web Site to Promote Community Dialogue

Emory University has launched a new, interactive Web site to generate public dialogue and involvement in the Clifton Community Partnership, a collaboration between Emory University, Emory Healthcare, and the businesses, organizations and neighbors who are part of the community.

The goal of the Clifton Community Partnership (CCP) is to create a vibrant economic, environmental and social community in which all can thrive.

The CCP Web site provides a framework for all stakeholders to share ideas and work together to improve the quality of life in the area. The interactive Web site joins a new monthly newsletter and ongoing public forums as ways Emory is encouraging community participation.

"In our strategic plans, Emory has made a major commitment to develop and nurture a healthy living-learning-working community," says Michael Mandl, Emory's executive vice president for finance and administration. "Emory is willing to do its part and to lend our leadership resources to help create a clear vision, strong consensus and commitments from other stakeholders."

The CCP focuses on issues related to sustainability of place, including:

• Enhancing accessibility with wider sidewalks and beautiful landscape design.

• Transforming Clifton and North Decatur Roads to increase pedestrian presence while reducing vehicular speed and maintaining urban design standards to improve the overall look and feel of the community.

• Targeting a few venues for small-scale, mixed-use development of housing, retail and entertainment "activity centers" adjacent to campus.

• Expanding the concept of transportation by providing more opportunities for employees to commute into the Clifton Community other than by single-occupancy vehicles.

Emory, which just this week was recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as one of the "Best Workplaces for Commuters," continues to expand its alternative transportation programs.

Working with the other employer/members of the Clifton Corridor Transportation Management Association, shuttle service to Decatur was greatly enhanced this spring, and the group's first major park and ride will open at North DeKalb Mall on June 19. By September, expanded shuttle routes will connect the Clifton community with other neighborhood hubs. The shuttles serve employees, students and neighbors — all for free.
