Candler Offers Postgraduate Fellowships in Practical Theology, Religious Practices

Emory University's Candler School of Theology, in association with the university's Graduate Division of Religion and the Lilly Endowment, Inc., invites applications for the Candler Postgraduate Fellowship Program in Practical Theology and Religious Practices for the academic year 2003-2004.

Candler Postgraduate Fellowships are intended for those with recently completed doctorates (Ph.D. or equivalent) in practical theology, or those with recent doctorates in other fields who wish to re-orient their training towards religious practices and equip themselves to teach practical theology in seminary settings.

The fellowship program provides both teaching and research opportunities. Fellows will teach courses in practical theology and religious practices at Candler and/or Emory College and will participate in the program’s core seminar, "Traditions and Religious Practices."

The semester-long seminar will provide an opportunity for fellows to share their own research and to engage in interdisciplinary conversation. Fellows also will be able to participate in seminars throughout the university.

The program provides fellows with significant time for research and preparing dissertations or other scholarly work for publication. The resources of the Emory library system, and especially the Pitts Theology Library, will be available to the fellows for their research.

Fellows will be appointed for nine months, with a stipend of $25,000 plus benefits. The deadline for applications is Feb. 28, 2003. Applicants should send a letter articulating the nature of their interest in the fellowship and outlining their proposed research plan, plus a curriculum vita, a transcript of highest degree held, a writing sample, and three letters of recommendation to: Ms. Pescha Penso, assistant director, Graduate Division of Religion, Callaway Center S214, Emory University, Atlanta, GA 30322. E-mail applications will be accepted at ppenso@emory.edu. Applicants will be notified by April 15.
