Former Mid-East Envoy Ross to Speak at Emory May 1

Emory University's Office of the Provost will present a talk by Dennis Ross, former envoy to the Middle East for Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, on Tuesday, May 1 at 4:30 p.m. at Glenn Memorial Auditorium. The free, public lecture is part of a series of ongoing events at Emory titled "Inquiry, Conflict and Peace-building in the Middle East," building on the interest generated by former President Jimmy Carter's book, "Palestine Peace Not Apartheid."

"As a university committed to producing new knowledge, we are confronting the most difficult questions of our time," said Emory Provost Earl Lewis. "These events are designed to provide a public forum for the expression of a wide variety of views, to facilitate scholarly analysis and to shed new light on this critical issue."

Ross will give a talk entitled "The Missing Peace: The Past and Future of the Middle East Process" and take questions from the audience. Questions may be submitted prior the event via the e-mail address pel@emory.edu, or in person immediately following the lecture. "Soapboxes" will be placed outside of Glenn Auditorium, to permit individuals to voice their own views at the conclusion of the lecture.

Carter, a University Distinguished Professor at Emory since 1982, spoke about the reasons he wrote "Palestine Peace Not Apartheid" at an Emory Town Hall Feb. 22. On April 5, Kenneth Stein, William E. Schatten Professor of Contemporary Middle Eastern History, Political Science and Israeli Studies, detailed his criticisms of the book. Plans for a fall 2007 campus panel discussion with President Carter on the topic are also underway.

Other events remaining in the "Inquiry, Conflict and Peace-building in the Middle East" series include upcoming trips by Emory faculty, administrators and staff to the Middle East, organized by Susan Henry-Crowe, dean of the chapel and of religious life at Emory, and a continuing education course on the Middle East conflict sponsored by Evening at Emory.
