Release date: 16-May-02 EPA's Whitman Recognizes Emory's Leadership in Alternative TransportationEmory University was one of two private employers hailed by EPA Administrator Christie Todd Whitman yesterday for their leadership in alternative transportation initiatives. (The other was Atlanta-based CH2M HILL.) She made her remarks at the Commuter Choice Leadership Initiative event in Washington yesterday, the kickoff of the Commuter Choice Leadership Initiative. The initiative is a voluntary partnership between businesses, governmental agencies and communities to promote commuting benefits that reduce air pollution, traffic congestion and transportation costs. "It is reassuring and an honor to be recognized for doing the right thing," says Brian Shaw, director of alternative transportation at Emory, who attended the Washington event. Among Emory's initiatives are car- and vanpooling, use of electric and natural gas maintenance vehicles, use of natural gas shuttle buses, MARTA subsidies, and a pilot program with Georgia Power that allows employees participating in alternative transportation options to check out electric Ford Th!nk cars for use during the work day.
