'Cradle of Christianity' Inspires Interfaith Dialogues

An interfaith dialogue led by Atlanta clergy on Sunday, Aug. 26, is among the community events surrounding the ongoing exhibition at Emory University's Michael C. Carlos Museum,"Cradle of Christianity: Jewish and Christian Treasures from the Holy Land."

The major traveling exhibition, on view at the Carlos Museum through Oct. 14, 2007, traces the shared roots of Judaism and Christianity through artifacts drawn from the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, which houses the foremost collection of biblical archeology in the world.

"Many people coming to see the exhibition want to talk about some of the issues brought to light by these extraordinary artifacts," says Elizabeth Horner, director of education programs at the Carlos Museum. "The museum staff are well able to talk about the archeological objects, and Emory faculty members can also explain much of the history and theology. The Atlanta faith community is another valuable resource we have drawn on, for interfaith discussions."

The Office of the Dean of Chapel and Religious Life at Emory University, the Faith Alliance of Metropolitan Atlanta and the Carlos Museum are sponsoring the community interfaith dialogues, which will be held in Cannon Chapel on the main quadrangle of the Emory campus.

The Monday, July 30, dialogue begins at 7 p.m. and will be led by Judy Marx, executive director of the Atlanta chapter of the American Jewish Committee, and Mark Crenshaw, director of the Interfaith Disability Connection at the Bobby Dodd Institute and an alumnus of Emory's Candler School of Theology.

The Sunday, Aug. 26, talk is set for 2 p.m. and will be led by Ron Segal, senior rabbi of Temple Sinai and Crenshaw.
