Release date: April 26, 2002 Book Examines Legacy of Former Emory President
Stuart Gulley, an Emory and Candler alumus who is now president of LaGrange College, will present his book, "The Academic President as Moral Leader: James T. Laney at Emory University, 1977–1993," from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., Thursday, May 9, in the Durham Reading Room, Pitts Theology Library, 505 Kilgo Circle. The program also will feature remarks from Laney, Billy Frye, Provost and Chancellor Emeritus of Emory, and James Fowler, professor and director of Emory’s Center for Ethics. The book examines Laney’s leadership during Emory’s transformation from a solid regional teaching institution into a major research university. By most measures—endowment, student enrollment, faculty size and square footage—Emory’s growth was enormous during his tenure. Gulley, nominated for Georgia Author of the Year for 2002, gives particular attention to Laney’s commitment to Emory as a moral community concerned with advancing the common good. His analysis provides insight into Emory’s maturation as a leading research university, the moral leadership given by Laney, and the development of higher education across the country. The book discussion is free and open to the public. For more information, call William Lawrence, 404-727-8879. |
