Atlanta Students Awarded Martin Luther King Jr. and Benjamin E. Mays Scholarships to Emory University

Nine students from Atlanta Public Schools have been awarded Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships by Emory University. The merit scholarship is for full tuition, fees, room and board to attend Emory for four years beginning this fall, an approximate four-year value of $149,720.

Three additional students have been awarded Benjamin E. Mays Scholarships for two-thirds tuition for four years at Emory, an approximate four-year value of $112,290.

The King Scholars began in 1969 with an endowment created by gifts from Emory faculty and students at the time of King’s death. In September 1988, the program was expanded to provide several outstanding seniors from Atlanta public high schools with Emory College scholarships each year.

There currently are 32 King Scholars enrolled in Emory College.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars for 2002 are:

Charlie Crum Jr., son of Barbara and Charlie Crum of Atlanta (30331), a senior at Frederick Douglass High School.
Maureen Dougherty, daughter of Linda and Kevin Dougherty of Atlanta (30331), a senior at Henry W. Grady High School.
Mark Graves, son of Denise Stevenson-Hawk of Atlanta (30331) and Ernald Graves of Atlanta (30327), a senior at North Atlanta High School.
Talisha Hampton, daughter of Lashan Carter of Atlanta (30318), a senior at Harper Archer High School.
Christopher Hartfield, son of Bernadette and Fred Hartfield Jr. of Atlanta (30318), a senior at Benjamin E. Mays High School.
Karen Jackson, daughter of Gladys and Bernard Jackson of Atlanta (30331), a senior at North Atlanta High School.
Nichiren Jones, son of Stephenie Jones of Atlanta (30331), a senior at Benjamin E. Mays High School.
Celeste Miller, daughter of Tawana and Kenny Miller of College Park (30349), a senior at Benjamin E. Mays High School.
Danielle Owens, daughter of Renita Owens of Atlanta (30317) and Joe Williams of Atlanta (30309), a senior at Henry W. Grady High School.

The Benjamin E. Mays Scholars for 2002 are:

Sonata Cooper, daughter of Angela and Dennis Gaddy of Lawrenceville (30345), a senior at North Atlanta High School.
Hong-Hoa Pham, daughter of Le-Hoa Touong and Tien Pham of Atlanta (30312), a senior at Frederick Douglass High School.
Tracy Steindel, daughter of Lynne and Steven Steindel of Atlanta (30318), a senior at North Atlanta High School.
