Release date: April 18, 2006 Atlanta Students Awarded Emory's MLK, Mays ScholarshipsSix students from Atlanta Public Schools have been awarded Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships by Emory University. The merit scholarship is for full tuition, fees, and university room and board to attend Emory for four years beginning this fall, an approximate four-year value of $169,632. Three additional students have been awarded Benjamin E. Mays Scholarships for two-thirds tuition for four years at Emory, an approximate four-year value of $85,536. The King Scholars began in 1969 with an endowment created by gifts from Emory faculty and students at the time of King’s death. In September 1988, the program was expanded to provide several outstanding seniors from Atlanta public high schools with Emory College scholarships each year. There currently are 22 King Scholars enrolled in Emory College. The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars for 2006 are: Thu Hien Dang, a senior at Frederick Douglass High School; The Benjamin E. Mays Scholars for 2006 are: Alycia Baisden, a senior at Booker T.
