Release date: May 1, 2007 Student Comedy Wins Big Laughs at National Campus MoviefestA team of Emory University students took home top comedy honors Friday night during the world's largest student film festival. "Discovering English" won TBS's Very Funny Film Award at Campus MovieFest's National Grand Finale. The students were awarded a check for $10,000 after beating out films made by students at 22 universities across the country. "Discovering English," produced by Emory sophomores Ryan Kuhar and Michael Goodman, is a clever send-up of 1950s educational films. Two Emory students are followed through various scenarios by an unseen narrator (voiced by Emory student James Watson, a Robert T. Jones Scholar from Bristol, England) who commands them to act out various words and phrases to teach them the basics of English syntax. View the film. Campus MovieFest was founded in 2001 by four Emory students who wondered what would happen if they gave all freshman halls an Apple laptop, a digital camcorder, and a week to make their own short movies. After proving to be immensely popular at Emory, the original team worked to share the event with students around the world.
