Political Experts Look at Midterm Elections

From "values voters" and voting rights to Southern politics, polling and the "political brain," the following Emory faculty – all veteran campaign watchers – are available to discuss the latest developments in the 2006 midterm elections.

Alan Abramowitz
American Politics/Voting Behavior/Elections
Abramowitz is a nationally known expert on politics, polling and elections whose forecasting model predicts a Democratic gain of 29 seats in the House of Representatives. His expertise includes election forecasting models, polls, party realignment in the United States, congressional elections and the effects of political campaigns on the electorate. Merle Black
National Elections/Southern Politics/Political Parties
Black, along with his twin brother Earl, is the foremost authority on Southern politics, particularly the rise of the Republican Party. One of the nation's most incisive commentators, Black is often called upon by media to discuss national government, Southern politics, political parties and elections. Robert Franklin
Religion and Politics/"Values Voters"
Franklin, Presidential Distinguished Professor of Social Ethics, comments on the rise of religious progressives since the last presidential campaign, the influence of faith-based initiatives on values voters, and the impact of the unrequited loyalty of evangelicals at the polls. Franklin has been involved with the Red Letter Christians Movement, is president of the Regional Council of Churches of Atlanta and regularly provides commentary for National Public Radio. 404-723- 8197 (c), rmfrank@emory.edu

Andra Gillespie
Political Participation/Effective Campaigning/ Post-civil Rights Era Leadership
Gillespie assistant can discuss American political participation, effective campaigning and voting behavior; African-American politics; race and politics, and post-civil rights generation leadership. Michael Kang
Gerrymandering/Voting Rights/Campaign Finance

Drew Westen
Psychology/Analysis of Voter Behavior
Westen, professor of psychology and psychiatry and director of clinical psychology at Emory, can provide a psychological analysis of political issues, including the psychology of voter behavior and the influence of emotions and non-verbal communication on their decision-making.
