A few Emory University students, including one who is a delegate for California, will be absent from class next week to get a first-hand lesson in politics at the Republican National Convention. "Attending the convention in person is an experience that can't be found by watching it on television," says senior Lauren Daugherty, chairperson of Emory's College Republicans who will attend the convention as a volunteer.

Daugherty, a rising senior from Clarksville, Tenn., is the first elected chairwoman of the Emory College Republicans. Daugherty says conservative women like herself find the GOP a welcoming place. "Women are a crucial part of the Republican Party. We feel that George W. Bush respects women, and takes women seriously, as opposed to Clinton. We like to say the W. stands for women. They make up nearly half of his cabinet, and it's not some affirmative action thing. These are strong, extremely qualified women and strong role models for us," Daugherty says. She can be reached at 404-403-6452 or ledaugh@learnlink.emory.edu.

Igor Birman, a second-year law student at Emory University, is a member of the California delegation to next week's RNC. At age 22, Birman is one of the youngest members of the delegation, and says he is "honored and humbled" by the responsibility. Birman first became involved in California state politics as vice-chairman of the California College Republicans and later was appointed to the California Republican Party State Central Committee. He is a former staffer to state senator and recall gubernatorial candidate Tom McClintock. Birman is from Oakland, Calif. Reach him at 510-714-0440 or igor@igorbirman.com.

Steven Haag, a sophomore from Cincinnati, worked on the Bush-Cheney campaign in Ohio this past summer. He will attend the RNC as a member of the Junior State of America, a non-partisan, non-profit organization designed to promote political activism among high school students. Haag, who says Junior State of America helped shaped his passionate interest in politics, will serve as a teacher and chaperone. He can be reached at 404-323-4545 or shaag@learnlink.emory.edu.
