The effects of industry-sponsored academic research in the 21st century will be the focus of the sixth annual Sam Nunn Policy Forum, to be held at Emory University April 5-7. The forum, presented by Emory, Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia, will explore the ethical, economic and intellectual impact of the growth of patents, copyrights, commercial ventures and companies being developed by faculties around the country. The forum also will look at the serious implications these activities have for undergraduate and graduate teaching and scholarly research. The goal of the forum is to develop a balanced set of recommendations to help university administrators and faculty negotiate issues involving intellectual property.

More than a dozen speakers are scheduled to address attendees either in panel discussions or forum-wide events, including former U.S. Senator Nunn, now co-chair and chief executive officer of the Nuclear Threat Initiative and an attorney, and conference organizer Donald G. Stein, the Candler Professor of Emergency Medicine and Neurology at Emory and interim vice president of research. UGA Provost Karen Holbrook will deliver her keynote speech, "The Importance of Commercialization on Tenure and Promotion Decisions," the morning of Saturday, April 6.

Other forum speakers include:

James Duderstadt, president emeritus and university professor of science and engineering at the University of Michigan, who will discuss "Corporate Governance of the University Inc.: Seeking a Balance between the Marketplace and the Public Interest"

Marcia Angell, senior lecturer in the Department of Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School and former editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine, who will speak on "The Clinical Trials Business: Who Gains?"

Mary L. Good, the Donaghey Professor and founding dean of the College of Information Science and Systems Engineering at the University of Arkansas, who will discuss "Science and Technology Policy: Why Should You Care?"

David H. Guston, associate professor of public policy and director of the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University, who will talk about "Toward Responsible Innovation in the Commercialized Academy"

Zach Hall, president and CEO of Envivo Pharmaceuticals Inc, a start-up biotechnology company focused on using simple organisms to discover drugs for neurodegenerative disease, and former executive vice chancellor at the University of California-San Francisco, who will discuss "Academia and Industry: A View from Across the Divide"
