Internationally renowned bioethicist Baruch Brody will give a lecture titled "One Tradition, Many Voices: Jewish Bioethics as a Model for Contemporary Society" during Emory University's annual Tenenbaum Family Lecture in Judaic Studies at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21. The lecture will be held in the reception hall of the Michael C. Carlos Museum on the Emory campus. Admission is free. An expert on the expanding and increasingly contentious field of bioethics, Brody embodies the synthesis of theory and practice. He is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Humanities in the Department of Philosophy at Rice University, and he directs the ethics program at The Methodist Hospital in Houston.

Brody also is the Leon Jaworski Professor of Biomedical Ethics and director of the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor College of Medicine, where he regularly joins students, interns and residents on grand rounds to raise ethical aspects of hard medical cases. A prolific author on topics such as abortion, life and death decision-making, and the ethics of biomedical research, Brody has served on many boards and advisory committees for medical institutes and has helped 11 healthcare institutions organize their ethics committees. The policy he drafted regarding futility of care has been adopted by hospitals throughout Texas.

Brody is the author and editor of 26 volumes and 150 articles and chapters. His major scholarly works are "Abortion and the Sanctity of Human Life," "Identity and Essence," "Life and Death Decision Making," "Ethical Issues in Drug Testing, Approval and Pricing," "The Ethics of Biomedical Research: An International Perspective" and "Taking Issue."

The Tenenbaum Family Lecture Series, sponsored by Emory's Donald A. Tam Institute for Jewish Studies, celebrates the family of the late Meyer W. Tenenbaum of Savannah, Ga., a 1931 alumnus of Emory College and a 1932 alumnus of Emory Law School. Other Tenenbaum family members who are Emory alumni include: his son, Samuel J. Tenenbaum of Columbia, S.C., Emory College class of 1965; nephew-in-law Ronald Kronowitz of Savannah, Emory Law School class of 1962; and nephew Bert Tenenbaum of Savannah, Emory College class of 1975.
