Gen. Wesley Clark to Speak At Emory

U.S. Army General Wesley Clark (Ret.) will deliver Emory University's inaugural Charles R. Yates Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m., Monday, April 10 in Glenn Memorial Auditorium, 1652 N. Decatur Road. Gen. Clark's speech, "Strategic Leadership in the 21st Century," is free and open to the public.

Clark served from 1997 to 2000 as the supreme allied commander of NATO and commander-in-chief of the U.S. European Command. A 1966 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, he graduated first in his class and went on to earn a master's degree in philosophy, politics and economics from Oxford University where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar.

Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000, Clark has since written two books on modern warfare as well as a series of books on historic military generals. He will sign copies of his books in the Carlos Museum on the Emory campus immediately following the lecture. This event is free and open to the public as well.

Clark's talk is the first event of the Charles R. Yates Distinguished Lecture Series, made possible by the Robert T. Jones Jr. Scholarship Endowment. The lecture series was founded to serve the Emory campus and the larger Atlanta community, and to provide opportunities for Emory's Bobby Jones Scholars to engage with top leaders and thinkers of today.

Yates, who was an Emory parent and received an honorary degree from Emory in 1999, was a British Amateur golf champion and played in the first Master's Tournament. A protege of legendary golfer Bobby Jones (Emory Law School, class of 1929), Yates was integrally involved in the formation of the Bobby Jones Scholarship in 1976.

The Bobby Jones Scholarship is awarded annually to four Emory students who receive full tuition and a travel stipend for their year of study at the University of St. Andrews, Emory's sister school. The scholarship recognizes individuals who will be excellent representatives of Emory at St. Andrews. Qualities required include intellectual excellence, a record of significant leadership, and academic interests that can be pursued through the offerings at St. Andrews. In addition, four St. Andrews students are chosen to spend a year at Emory.

Free parking for the event is available in the Fishburne Deck, 1672 N. Decatur Road. For more information, call 404-727-5253.
