Emory Appoints David L. Wynes Vice President for Research Administration

Emory University has appointed David L. Wynes as its new vice president for research administration, effective Feb. 1, 2007. Wynes currently is senior associate vice president for research at the University of Iowa and director of research services administration.

Since joining the University of Iowa in 1991, Wynes has served as associate director of the Division of Sponsored Programs, special assistant to the vice president for research, and as assistant, then associate vice president for research. While at Iowa, Wynes created and oversaw the university's clinical trials office and was a leader in developing and implementing policies related to conflict of interest, research ethics, animals in research, human subject research accreditation, and research health and safety.

Emory's Office of Research Administration was created in 1996 to foster excellence in research throughout all units of the university. The vice president for research administration reports directly to the executive vice president for health affairs, Michael M. E. Johns, to university provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, Earl Lewis, and to executive vice president for finance and administration, Michael J. Mandl.

The Office of Research Administration includes the Office of Research Compliance, Office of Sponsored Programs, Office of Technology Transfer, University Research Committee, and Office of Grants and Contracts. These offices support and foster the scholarly work of the faculty; facilitate multidisciplinary initiatives within the university; work with faculty and other offices to develop new sources of funding; support, coordinate and direct sponsored and non-sponsored research activities as well as university-based technology transfer programs; and establish good working relationships with the business community.

"David Wynes has a multitude of experience in research administration that will serve Emory well as it continues on an upward trajectory of interdisciplinary research expansion throughout the university," said Johns. "As a complex and successful academic research institution, Emory University requires vigilant attention to research compliance, ethics, and the health and safety of our investigators and animal and human research subjects. Wynes is extremely well qualified to guide those functions of our research enterprise. In addition, we are confident he will lead us in maintaining the research momentum that has moved Emory into the top tier of academic research institutions nationally."

Wynes received his doctorate in zoology from Miami University of Ohio in 1979. He earned his bachelor's degree in biology from Augustana College in 1973, followed by a master's degree in biology from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse in 1976. He served as an assistant professor of environmental science at Nichols College in Massachusetts from 1979-1983. He later was coordinator of the Marine Ecology Summer Program at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Mass., then administrative director of the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory in Salsbury Cove, Maine. Wynes also served as assistant director for science and technology in the Office of Government Resources at Tufts University, as director of the biological laboratories at Boston University, and as senior scientist at Eastern Environmental Associates in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

Wynes is a frequent invited speaker to national biomedical research meetings on topics of research accreditation, regulation and compliance. He is a member of the board of directors and the research compliance and administration committee of the Council on Governmental Relations in Washington, D.C.; chair of the Council on Accreditation of the National Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs; and a member of Pubic Responsibility in Medicine & Research and the National Council of University Research Administrators.
