Admission Trends Emerge
for the Emory College Class Of 2007

Emory College, the undergraduate division of Emory University, experienced a record number of 10,384 applicants for the 1,270-member class of 2007 -- a 6 percent increase from last year, says Dean of Admission Daniel Walls.

The geographic distribution of all undergraduate applicants shows a continuing rise in applications from the Southeast, while applicants from the West and Southwest each rose by 3 percent. International applications continue to grow (nearly 50 percent over the past four years). International enrollment decreased slightly from last year, although international students currently comprise 4 percent of the class, staying on track to reach the college's goal of 5 percent.

Early decision applications were down nearly 9 percent, after several years of steady increase. The drop in applicants for early decision (Emory has two rounds, allowing students to be certain of their choice) was primarily due to financial concerns, Walls says.

"More students wanted to compare offers of financial aid and merit scholarships this year due to economic concerns. Applying early decision does not allow a family to compare various financial offers," Walls says. Early decision applicants comprise 33 percent of the class. The combined early-decision applicants have an average SAT of 1318, an average ACT of 33 and a GPA of 3.81.

Official numbers will not be available until the registrar’s date of record Aug. 28, but the preliminary profile of the incoming class is:
