Hanan Ashrawi, founder and first secretary general of the Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy
Emory University's Office of the Provost will present a talk by Hanan Ashrawi, founder and first secretary general of the Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy, on Monday, Oct. 29, at 4:30 p.m. in Glenn Auditorium. The lecture is part of a series of ongoing events at Emory titled "Inquiry, Conflict and Peacebuilding in the Middle East."

PLEASE NOTE: The lecture in Glenn will be open only to members of the Emory community and other colleges and universities. A photo ID is required, identifying the carrier as a student, faculty member or staff member at Emory or another college or university. Seating is available for the public to watch a video feed in White Hall 208. No bags, purses or backpacks will be permitted in Glenn, but these may be checked securely outside.

Ashrawi, a distinguished Palestinian scholar and former minister of higher education and research in the Palestinian Authority, is well known throughout the world for her strong advocacy of human rights and peace-making. Her talk will focus on the prospects for peace in the Middle East.

Questions may be submitted prior the event via the e-mail address pel@emory.edu, or in person immediately following the lecture. "Soapboxes" will be placed outside of Glenn Auditorium, to permit individuals to voice their own views at the conclusion of the lecture.

"As a university committed to producing knowledge, we are confronting the most difficult questions of our time," says Emory Provost Earl Lewis. "These events are designed to provide a public forum for the expression of a wide variety of views, to facilitate scholarly analysis and to shed new light on this critical issue."

Ashrawi is an elected member of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) and the founder and board member of the National Coalition for Accountability and Integrity. Ashrawi also is founder and commissioner of the Palestinian Independent Commission for Citizen’s Rights (PICCR) and served as its first commissioner general. Ashrawi was actively engaged in the planning and implementation of programs and systems of reform, accountability and the rule of law as head of the previous PLC’s Special Committee on Reform and leadership within the National Reform Committee. From 1996-1998, she served as the Minister of Higher Education and Research.

The “Inquiry, Conflict and Peace-building in the Middle East” series was initiated by Emory's Office of the Provost, with former President Jimmy Carter as the first speaker last February. Carter, a University Distinguished Professor at Emory since 1982, spoke about the reasons he wrote "Palestine Peace Not Apartheid" at an Emory Town Hall, followed in April by a talk by Kenneth Stein, William E. Schatten Professor of Contemporary Middle Eastern History, Political Science and Israeli Studies, who detailed his criticisms of the Carter book. Dennis Ross, former envoy to the Middle East for Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, also spoke last spring.

The series will continue with various presentations this fall by Emory community members who traveled to Israel in August.
