Basic Graduate Theological Studies Offered at Candler

Emory University's Candler School of Theology will offer the United Methodist Church (UMC) program of Basic Graduate Theological Studies (BGTS) beginning in 2004. The curriculum will be offered through month-long summer courses and shorter January intensive classes.

In summer 2004, from July 11-Aug. 6, Candler will offer its two basic history and worship courses, "Introduction to the History of Christian Thought" and "Public Worship." The polity and theology courses of United Methodist Studies also will be offered.

BGTS, a UMC program of theological education, "already may be taken through regular semester programming," says Shonda Jones, assistant dean for admissions and financial aid. The summer courses are envisioned for:

• local pastors requiring advanced (seminary) courses beyond the Course of Study for full conference membership and ordination as elder;
• candidates for deacon’s orders, who are not completing a master’s degree and are required to have basic graduate theological education (alternative route);
• people seeking certification in one of UMC-recognized specialized ministries;
• individuals trying theological education before transitioning into a regular degree program; and
• laity preparing for other forms of effective church leadership.

"The courses will be scheduled so that people seeking BGTS for deacon's orders may complete the required 24-plus hours/credits in three years of January and June courses," says Jones. Individuals needing the 32 hours/credits for elder's orders may take longer to complete the requirements.

The United Methodist Studies courses (history, polity, doctrine) will be offered in rotation in January and July. Other anticipated course offerings include:

Summer 2005 – "Old Testament Introduction" and "Mission/Evangelism"; and
Summer 2006 – "New Testament Introduction" and "Systematic Theology."

Those interested in the BGTS program should apply by May 1 for summer admission, and July 1 for fall admission as a special student (non-degree). Admission as a special student requires a bachelor of arts or comparable degree. Candidates should contact the Candler Office of Admissions and Financial Aid for a catalog and application materials at 404-727-6326 or candleradmissions@emory.edu.
