Leading editorial cartoonists from around the world will gather at Emory University Nov. 12-15 for "Cartooning for Peace," a series of public discussions and classroom lectures on the role of their art when it comes to conflict, global health and political leadership. An exhibit featuring more than 100 cartoons by the artists is currently on display at Emory's Schatten Gallery in the Woodruff Library, and will continue through Dec. 15.

Emory's Claus M. Halle Institute for Global Learning is hosting the 10 cartoonists – including Mike Lukovich of the Atlanta-Journal Constitution; Plantu of France; Baha Boukhari of Palestine; Godfrey Mwampembwa of Kenya; Michel Kichka of Israel; No-rio Yamanoi of Japan; and Jeff Danziger, Liza Donnelly and Ann Telnaes, from the United States. "Cartooning for Peace" is the brainchild of Plantu, the editorial cartoonist of the French daily newspaper "Le Monde," who was struck by the anger and divisive debate caused by the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in 2006. "This sudden interest in political cartooning made me think that this polemic presented, quite possibly, an opportunity to cartoonists – above all, an opportunity to start an intellectual debate," Plantu said.

As a forum for that debate, "Cartooning for Peace" began that same year with a seminar and an exhibition, co-sponsored by the Halle Institute, at the U.N. Headquarters in New York.

"Cartooning for Peace" at Emory features an expanded version of the original traveling exhibit and a series of provocative discussions, including topics such as "Women in Cartooning: A Different Perspective;" "Picturing Conflict, Envisioning Peace in the Middle East;" and "The Art of Controversy: Where to Draw the Line?"
