'Classroom on the Quad' Explores Immigration Issues

Emory University presents "Classroom on the Quad," an interdisciplinary examination of complex public issues, from 10 a.m.-3:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the Student Activity and Academic Center on the Clairmont Campus. (Moved from the Emory Quadrangle due to weather conditions). Keynote speaker Janet Reno, former U.S. Attorney General, will discuss immigration, the theme for this year's event, at 2 p.m.

Also scheduled are a variety of other speakers from the Emory community and beyond. Georgia State Senator David Adelman will give a bipartisan update and overview of immigration issues in the state at 11:15 a.m., followed by a faculty panel discussion at 1 p.m. that will feature Vialla Hartfield-Mendez, Juan del Aguila, Monica Capra and Alexander Escobar.

In support of Classroom on the Quad's focus on immigration, the University Senate, Student Government Association and others across campus are collecting books to benefit metro Atlanta's immigrant and refugee population. New and gently used books for children and adults (with a special request for bilingual dictionaries) will be donated to four community partners: Refugee Family Services, Clarkston Community Center, Montclair Elementary School and Clarkston High School. Book collection will take place on Asbury Circle near Cox Hall.

The Emory Student Government Association is sponsoring the non-partisan event in collaboration with the Emory College Council, University Senate and others. For more information, contact Kevin Kelly, kjkelly@emory.edu.
